Eli Roth returns with an uneven cannibal flick
21 June 2014 | by Red-Barracuda (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK) – See all my reviews
Eli Roth is a director whose fame certainly goes before him. These days you don't really get many directors unashamedly dedicated to the horror genre like you did in years gone by. I like Eli Roth for this reason and I do find him a somewhat engaging, funny and entertaining guy. On the flip side I would have to say that I have found his output to be somewhat patchy and uneven. And frustratingly sparse at that. The Green Inferno is his first feature film as director since Hostel: Part II from way back in 2007! It's a long time to be out of the game. The question would have to be has he came back in a good way? Well, despite the undoubted promise of the central idea, it's a film that is kind of as frustrating as most of his other work.
The basic idea here is to bring back a type of movie that only really existed briefly over thirty years ago. The cannibal film was a particularly notorious sub-genre. Most of the films got banned here in the UK; some still remain so to this day in their uncut forms. Their combination of graphic violence, sexual assault and real animal killing made them real bad boys of the horror genre. Cannibal Holocaust (1980) is the one film that Roth has mentioned in particular as an influence and for this viewer it is easily one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. Its docudrama, found footage style mixed with a proper mean-spiritedness made it a pretty gruelling film but very well made. The Green Inferno takes a decidedly different approach to its material and it's not always a successful one. Where Holocaust was relentlessly confrontational, Roth's film is often quite jokey. This approach means that the tone overall fluctuates wildly but it definitely dissipates the overall threat posed by the cannibals. The choice of protagonists points to the change immediately in that it centres on a group of eco aware students who travel into the middle of the Amazonian rain-forest to stage a viral protest against some environment destroying workers, needless to say things take a bad turn and they wind up captive by a tribe of cannibals. The very fact that the film centres on a group of students makes this film surely the first cannibal film that doubles up as a teen movie! It's an awkward combination with a pretty ropey script and – the main girl played by Lorenzo Izzo aside - unlikable characters. The social commentary is not so unexpected for this type of movie, as Cannibal Holocaust had that too but it is modernised considerably here – the target is after all viral warriors who are more interested in being famous than for doing the right thing.
So how does it work simply as a horror movie? Well, it certainly has its fair share of gory violence. But it has less impact than it should because of the silly jokey tone that permeates it, even once the students have been captured. Because they aren't taking their situation seriously enough, it's hard for us in the audience to either unfortunately. The on-location photography certainly adds a fair bit it has to be said and the cannibals themselves are quite distinctive too, in particular the more prominent members of the tribe were somewhat creepy. I can't help feeling though that if Roth had reigned in the silly stuff and went full-on with this material with a more disciplined approach then it would have made for a far better film. It feels slightly like a missed opportunity and I am sad to say this as I was really on this one's side and had quite a bit of optimism for it.

Destined for obscurity, but it deserves better
23 February 2015 | by Daniel Anderson – See all my reviews
It saddens me that this film will not receive a wider audience. With an English title of "Wolf Totem" very few outside of France or China will be tempted to see it, but it is their loss.
Wolf Totem manages to bring to the big screen the majesty and mystery of wolves. But it is much more than a National Geographic or Animal Planet documentary. (Although those in themselves would be a great success.) It also invites us into the world of Inner Mongolia and tells a compelling tale of human love and loss. This is not Le Renard et L'infant (The Fox and the Child). It succeeds in telling a much grander tale. The acting is all very believable and unlike the usual over-the-top soap opera-esque fare available in most Chinese cinema.
But come for the wolves. I could howl their praises all night long.

Beautifully Directed and Acted

First class effort from Chris Evans. A touching and poignant story well-acted by Chris and Alice Eve. Often funny, sometime sad;it definitely tugs at the heart strings. The adventures of these two somewhat lost creatures that take place in the space of a night in New York benefited from a good screenplay and some great cinematography. Chris Evans has shown that he is a talented and gifted film maker and actor and I for one will go to see his next effort without a second thought. Before We Go left me with a warm fuzzy feeling afterward. I just need to know what happens next because it can't just stop here! It is getting a disjointed release in my opinion however I am sure that all will get to see it in time. Well worth a watch!

Frank Martin, played by newcomer Ed Skrein, a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life - or so he thinks - transporting classified packages for questionable people. When Frank's father (Ray Stevenson) pays him a visit in the south of France, their father-son bonding weekend takes a turn for the worse when Frank is engaged by a cunning femme-fatale, Anna (Loan Chabanol), and her three seductive sidekicks to orchestrate the bank heist of the century. Frank must use his covert expertise and knowledge of fast cars, fast driving and fast women to outrun a sinister Russian kingpin, and worse than that, he is thrust into a dangerous game of chess with a team of gorgeous women out for revenge. From the producers of LUCY and the TAKEN trilogy, THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED is a fresh personification of the iconic role of Frank Martin, that launches the high-octane franchise into the present-day and introduces it to the next generation of thrill-seekers. Gripping telling of a true story
8 April 2015 | by Don E. Gardner (Ogden, Utah) – See all my reviews
This afternoon I saw an "advanced screening" of this gripping true story of six black African LDS (Mormon) missionaries' harrowing efforts to get safely out of Monrovia at the beginning of the 1989 Liberian civil war. The soundtrack is fresh and appropriate, the actors are excellent and the African locations give the production a very authentic look and feel. The direction is very tight and kept me on the edge of my seat up to the very end. The action is tense and dramatic, but I agree with other reviewers who have noted that there is just enough humor to give your nerves a rest from time-to-time. Although elements of their missionary purpose and religion play an obvious role in their escape attempt the protagonists do not engage in preachy dialog. In fact, just the opposite. I felt genuine anguish with several of the characters as they confronted their fears and doubts in very dangerous circumstances beyond their control. This is one of the best films (of any kind) that I have seen recently and I strongly recommend it!

A group of grad students have booked passage on the crabbing boat Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Belugas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship. Written by MovieKnut

If you loved the special effects in John Carpenter's The Thing, you dare not miss this film. The special effects are just unbelievable. You'll just have to see for yourself, how good they are. Obviously, when a special-FX man himself directs a picture, just as Stan Winston directed the cult horror film Pumpkinhead(1988), you'll know that you are you're in for a real treat.
The plot of the film deals with a soviet space shuttle that has crash landed into the icy cold waters of the Bering sea. A group of graduate students aboard the titular fishing trawler Harbinger, who are studying the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea, accidentally stumble upon a distress beacon which is emanating from a submerged block of ice. They recover the soviet wreckage, examine it, and find the frozen corpses of the Soviet astronauts within.
What happens next is for you to see and find out.
Verdict: a decent cast, with veteran actor Lance Henriksen at the helm. The pretty Camille Balsamo reminds me of actress Sandra Bullock. Also Winston James Francis gives a wonder performance as Big G. He reminded me of the W.W.E. wrestler Paul Donald Wight Jr.(a.k.a. Big Show). Winston is a very versatile actor. The sound-effects, photography and acting is professionally handled. It should be noted that this film began by funds from fan donations through Kickstarter.

Dialogue and animation reminded me of Clutch Cargo.
Compared to what is shown today even on TV, a student could do better.
Story line about vengeance is not kid friendly even though they make up at the end.
If the story is about bullies and vengeance it could have been better portrayed.
if I wasn't with my granddaughter I would have left.
Learned to never go see a movie that only has 1 showing a day at the theater.

Accurate portrayal of a mother's grief 18 July 2015 | by hoxjennifer (Canada) – See all my reviews Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez are an incredible team together. I'm surprised this movie didn't get more recognition - it certainly deserves it. Lila and Eve is about the story of two grieving mothers who want more than just comfort over the death of their children, but revenge. Lila, especially, learns not only about the grieving process but about herself and eventually how to accept what is and what is not within her control. Without a doubt, JLo is stunning in this movie. I often forget how talented this lady is, as both a musician and an actor. This is probably her best performance yet. Viola Davis also gives an incredible and accurate portrayal of a grieving mother conflicted over the sudden murder of her son.
A beautiful drama. Beware there is a plot twist. I won't spoil it for anyone here, but it's not too hard to figure out when you get into the film.
